Fragrance Notes

The Difference Between Asa and Flax

In Japanese, the term asa is commonly used to describe plant-based fibers, but it actually refers to a variety of materials. Among them, the fiber derived from flax (known as ama in Japanese) is much lighter and more supple compared to general asa types such as hemp. Flax is highly breathable and known for its soft, skin-friendly texture.

The fabric woven from flax fibers is what we call linen. It is cherished as a high-quality natural material, often used for fine shirts, bedding, and summer dresses. The scent of "Konpaku"―a clean and elegant blend of indigo and white―naturally aligns with the soft, light-filtering texture of linen.

About Sometsuke (Blue-and-White Porcelain)

Sometsuke is a traditional porcelain decoration technique that features blue patterns painted on a white base. Originally developed in China, the method is known locally there as qinghua (blue flowers).

The process involves forming and bisque-firing a white porcelain base, then hand-painting designs using a cobalt-based pigment called gosu. A transparent glaze is then applied before firing the final piece. In Japan, when sometsuke was first introduced in the 17th century, the cobalt pigment produced a muted, soft blue tone. At the time, cobalt was difficult to source, so production was limited and sporadic.

Later, in the 19th century, Germany began producing cobalt in larger quantities, making it more accessible. This led to a shift in the appearance of sometsuke, with brighter and more vivid blues becoming the standard.
