MOTHER ROAD 66\u2019s Origins and Background<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

MOTHER ROAD is the nickname for the famous US highway \u201cRoute 66,\u201d which runs from Chicago to Los Angeles. It was featured in John Steinbeck\u2019s novel, \u201cThe Grapes of Wrath,\u201d and it became a symbol of the great migration of working class families who traveled west seeking a better life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1960s Japan, American TV dramas and jazz were hugely popular and aspirational. 
The TV drama \u201cRoute 66\u201d and its theme song, in particular, were synonymous with the spirit of American freedom and prosperity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was just a small child in the 1960s when this series was at the height of its popularity. However, I believe that I was heavily influenced by my seniors who yearned for the free-spirited postwar culture, and I grew up absorbing this vibe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along with this nostalgia, I chose the name MOTHER ROAD, not merely because it had a nice ring to it, but because I wanted to preserve in its scent a piece of the culture that helped build and define modern Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another Name-related Story<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s another story related to the name MOTHER ROAD 66.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally, I was thinking of using the name ROUTE 66 for the fragrance, but at the time, another company held the trademark, so I had no choice but to abandon the idea. That\u2019s\u3000why I decided on the name MOTHER ROAD \u2013 it had both  a literary feel while symbolizing a sense of free-spirited adventure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scent Characteristics and Perfume Creation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The fragrance itself opens with a fresh and bright note that blends Italian citrus with French \u3000herbs, then gradually transitions into a subtle, clean scent reminiscent of a freshly washed white cotton shirt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The comforting feel of \u201cdry cotton\u201d seems particularly well-suited to Japan\u2019s humid climate and to the Japanese appreciation for cleanliness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Pioneer in Men\u2019s Fragrances<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the 2000s, when the term \u201caging odor\u201d (\u52a0\u9f62\u81ed, kareish\u016b<\/em>) became a hot topic, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

middle-aged men began to take a greater interest in grooming and wearing fragrances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


However, the mindset that \u201cit\u2019s wrong for a man to wear perfume,\u201d or \u201cit\u2019s embarrassing for a man to buy perfume at a department store\u201d was still deeply rooted in the Japanese psyche. So, I was very fortunate at the time, for my perfume to be featured in a men\u2019s mail-order catalog magazine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some within the magazine were cautious, warning, \u201cSince customers can\u2019t experience the scent firsthand, will it really sell through mail order?\u201d However, the female member of  staff in charge declared with conviction, \u201cThis is definitely going to work!\u201d Thanks\u3000
to her, MOTHER ROAD 66 was prominently featured in the magazine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was the magazine\u2019s first time to handle a men\u2019s fragrance. After the inclusion of MOTHER ROAD 66, orders flooded in, far exceeding all expectations. The response was so overwhelming that even the magazine\u2019s top executives were astonished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Red Label<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The original square red label had a fun, American pop-style design. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For customers in their 40s and 50s at the time of launch, the design may have evoked\u3000nostalgia for American design. I\u2019m truly delighted that customers have continued to enjoy MOTHER ROAD 66, not only as \u201ctheir signature fragrance,\u201d but also because of its visual image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Encounter with a Celebrity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

MOTHER ROAD 66 has been a longtime favorite of Toru Yazawa from the band Alice since he first came across it in 2009. When he stopped by our atelier during a break in his nationwide tour, he said cheerfully:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI love that this fragrance isn\u2019t too strong, and I like that it gives off just a little scent <\/p>\n\n\n\n

when you\u2019re having a quiet conversation. It\u2019s also great when you\u2019re hugging people.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His words left a strong impression on me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


“After all, a scent that really fills the room is kind of off-putting, right? It\u2019s not about<\/p>\n\n\n\n

desperately trying to attract a ton of people. If someone you know well comes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

close to you, you  think, ‘Oh, you smell nice,’ that\u2019s more than enough for me.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toru Yazawa\u2019s natural charm really comes across in his words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Fragrance is Something You Notice When you Get Close<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There was a time when men\u2019s fragrances were promoted as \u201cattraction perfumes,\u201d and\u3000strong, sensual scents were favored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, while that might work once you\u2019re already close to someone, it can sometimes be overpowering for first meetings. Many women instinctively pull back from such strong\u3000scents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I believe that a soft, subtle fragrance, borne gently on the air is actually more attractive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Generation Gaps and Laughter<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When I was surfing the Internet, I discovered that for today\u2019s generation, \u201cMOTHER ROAD\u201d is used in completely different contexts in games, anime, and comics. My findings made me chuckle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using English Names<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

PARFUM SATORI has many fragrances with Japanese names under the theme of <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJapanese scents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, although MOTHER ROAD 66 is an English name, it is nevertheless part of
a culture that shaped a certain era in Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, ever since I was a child, my parents took me to see foreign sights and scenery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not to mention, I was drawn to foreign countries in literature. This is part of who I am,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and I have attached English names to other fragrances as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Fragrance Unchanged for 17 Years<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

PARFUM SATORI began as a personal project in 2000, and thanks to the success of MOTHER ROAD 66, it was officially incorporated in 2009 and is now celebrating its 17th year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The perfume MOTHER ROAD 66 is still carried as a long-selling product in the mail-order catalog where it was first featured \u2014 “Light Up Shopping Club” (formerly Sony Family Club).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 2024, the product has also been available at all of the magazine\u2019s directly-operated stores, where it has been favorably received by new generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Community that Transcends Generation<\/strong> and Gender<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At the time of its launch, we positioned and proposed it as a \u201cfirst time fragrance for men unfamiliar with perfume.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, it wasn\u2019t long before we began receiving feedback such as \u201cI started using it<\/p>\n\n\n\n

because of my wife and daughter,” and \u201cwe use it as a couple.\u201d Before long, it was\u3000<\/p>\n\n\n\n

accepted by younger female customers as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, through department stores and retailers like @cosme, the fragrance is also\u3000<\/p>\n\n\n\n

attracting younger generations and overseas customers. In an industry where trends\u3000<\/p>\n\n\n\n

change rapidly, we are truly grateful that MOTHER ROAD 66 has been loved by <\/p>\n\n\n\n

many people for such a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
