Thermolysis and Sublimation:
An Exploration of Fragrance in Time and Space \u2014 Inspired by Agarwood<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25a0 <\/strong>The Scent of Aromatic Wood and the Experience of Time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The quiet way in which aromatic woods \u2014especially agarwood \u2014release their fragrance somehow evokes the <\/p>\n\n\n\n

gentle flow of time. A small piece of charcoal in an incense burner, covered in ash,                    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

transmits heat indirectly. Agarwood and kyara<\/em> slowly release their exquisite aromas <\/p>\n\n\n\n

without coming into contact with a naked  flame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aroma does not explode from a single point, instead it drifts softly in line with the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

temperature and humidity of the environment; it then circles the area around the <\/p>\n\n\n\n

incense burner. It\u2019s almost as if an invisible hemispherical dome gently manifests,  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

cradling the fragrance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

My Encounter with K\u014dd\u014d<\/em> <\/em>(the Art of Incense Appreciation)<\/p>\n\n\n\n


I vividly remember the moment in the <\/em>k\u014dd\u014d<\/em> classroom when I handled an incense<\/p>\n\n\n\n

burner for the first time. Holding it gently in my left hand, I covered it  softly with<\/p>\n\n\n\n

my right hand, \u201clistening\u201d to the captured fragrance as it escaped through<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the gaps in my fingers. Within that subtle movement, I could sense something<\/p>\n\n\n\n

rising. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fragrance never imposes itself. Rather, it serenely drifts, attuning itself to the <\/p>\n\n\n\n

temperature of your hand and the quiet of your breathing. In k\u014dd\u014d<\/em>, one \u201clistens\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

to a fragrance. But to me, it was like \u201cobserving\u201d a fragrance manifesting as<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a subtle shape.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25a0<\/strong>Thermolysis and Evaporation<\/strong>\u2500\u2500<\/strong>How Aromatic Woods Produce their Scent<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Scientifically speaking, the mechanism behind this involves a process known as <\/p>\n\n\n\n

thermolysis. The resin components and agarwood acids contained within the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

aromatic wood are chemically broken down by heat and are transformed into<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a variety of compounds. After vaporization, these newly formed molecules<\/p>\n\n\n\n

then vaporize, released into the air, ultimately reaching our noses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other words, the fragrance of aromatic woods comes about through a dual<\/p>\n\n\n\n

process. New aromatic molecules are created through a chemical reaction, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

and are then diffused into the surrounding environment through physical change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\u25a0 <\/strong>The Diffusion of Perfume and a Contrasting Philosophy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Conversely, perfume operates on an entirely different principle. Conventional<\/p>\n\n\n\n

fragrances are created by dissolving aromatic compounds in ethanol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ethanol is extremely volatile, and the moment it comes into contact with<\/p>\n\n\n\n

human skin or air, the fragrance is propelled outward. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a major characteristic of perfume. A single spray of perfume<\/p>\n\n\n\n

explodes into the environment. Whereas aromatic woods gradually release<\/p>\n\n\n\n

their fragrance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And this led me to thinking: although we apply perfume to the skin, could<\/p>\n\n\n\n

we do not create something that releases its fragrance like aromatic wood? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of a fragrance that disperses instantaneously, how about one<\/p>\n\n\n\n

that lingers in the environment like a veil, enveloping and expanding? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A fragrance that softly evokes the gentle passage of time. Surely I could<\/p>\n\n\n\n

come up with such a formula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25a0Sublimating Aromatic Ingredients\u2500\u2500Agarwood EssenceInfused into the Blend<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Over time, this very question began to incorporate itself naturally into the perfumes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was formulating. In hindsight, I realized\u2015quite unconsciously\u2015I had developed<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a strong preference for a particular type of ingredient: not liquid oils, but fragrances<\/p>\n\n\n\n

that present themselves as crystals, in solid form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, borneol, coumarin, vanillin, heliotropin (piperonal), indole\u2014 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

all are white, delicate crystals that slowly release their fragrance even at room <\/p>\n\n\n\n

temperature. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is due to a physical phenomenon called \u201csublimation,\u201d where a solid<\/p>\n\n\n\n

transitions directly into a gas without passing through a liquid state, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

releasing its molecules into the air.  This same phenomenon can be seen in<\/p>\n\n\n\n

incense and camphor; it lends the fragrance a gentleness in its diffusion<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and a lingering quality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25a0<\/strong>From Intuition to Conviction\u2500\u2500Insight and Reaffirmation in Perfumery<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It was not until quite recently that I began to think: perhaps it\u2019s the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

properties of crystalline fragrance ingredients that have given my perfumes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a release that resembles that of aromatic woods. Thermolysis and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

sublimation; although the mechanisms vary, the way in which fragrance<\/p>\n\n\n\n

gently releases, and then lingers in the air, I feel there is a deep correlation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

between the two.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The properties of these \u201csublimating fragrance ingredients\u201d were something<\/p>\n\n\n\n


I had learned from my perfumery teacher. He had given me a firm<\/p>\n\n\n\n

basis for the choices I had already been making intuitively. Although my<\/p>\n\n\n\n

approach had not changed, it was the moment when my instincts and actual <\/p>\n\n\n\n

practiced aligned, and for that, I am deeply indebted to my teacher. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\u25a0 <\/strong>Perfume Emulating Agarwood<\/strong>\u2500\u2500<\/strong>Fragrance that lingers rather than diffuses<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An ethanol-based perfume that possesses the slow, deliberate release and <\/p>\n\n\n\n

enveloping qualities of aromatic woods. For me to bring this into being, I would need<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 to restrain highly diffusive fragrance materials and instead make full <\/p>\n\n\n\n

use of the \u201cheaviness\u201d and \u201cretention\u201d inherent in crystalline fragrance ingredients.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is one approach to formulation rooted entirely in my own personal sensibility,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

but even now it remains a way of thinking I deeply value when considering the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

temporal existence of fragrance and its relationship to the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The true gift of aromatic woods may not lie just in their fragrance, but in the poised<\/p>\n\n\n\n

manner of their release and the intervals within them.  I hope to carry this gift forward<\/p>\n\n\n\n

with care, transforming it into a different medium of perfume.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
